It was true - De was more comfortable. More relaxed, you might say. Those who knew him, namely Bill and Len, would have probably said that he was more himself than they had seen him since he returned. And they all knew, even if they hadn't said it yet, that it was due in large part to the small black dog who had suddenly fallen into their lives.
No one had come forward to claim the puppy, and De had finally allowed himself to believe that he could call her his. He'd taken her to sickbay to get her checked out and certified healthy, which she had passed with flying colours; he'd registered her on the ship roster at the same time, nameless as yet, just down as "Black Labrador, Owners: DeForest Kelley, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner"; and he'd replicated her a collar of her own (that one that Len had given Bill really had been too big, now that he thought about it, with an inward smile. Not suitable for a puppy), together with a plain brass tag, ready for a...name

The puppy skidded to a stop suddenly, grabbing the toy and shaking it once before trotting over to De and sitting expectantly at his feet. The toy, a stuffed critter of unknown origin, dangled from her mouth.
She was good at waiting. Not as good as she had been, once. But good.
"Drop it," said De, a tone to be obeyed in his voice, as he tugged the toy gently downwards. "Drop it."
He didn't know if she'd understand him, but she was proving to be a quick learner, and it was always good to train a dog as much as possible. Plus, fetch was very fun to play.
