Classic recs: The post of extreme randomness

Oct 24, 2020 11:21

Meta, Reactors, Vids and Artwork work that deserve some love.

Fandom is a City by ruuger is a lovely essay on the rise and fall of fandoms - about their longevity and fleetingness and the traces they leave in their wake. The author puts it far more eloquently than I could so go read. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

More randomness this way... )

Yay! I'm happy to hear the Herald managed to lure you far enough into Reddit to discover swallowedshark. Their work is definitely worth a look!
And I enjoyed the vid. ^^

I'm in great company then! I don't have a YT channel so haven't been commenting on his posts and I feel I probably should.

I hope you enjoy the other recs when you get there :)

I'm so glad you recced that piece by ruuger. I also really liked it.

What I'm also glad about re: your including Reactors is that it's another one of those steps in fandom changes that I noticed when I was going back through this community. I mean, there were always reaction-posts and episode reviews and people have always done rewatches, (there have even been communities for them). But the era of recording one's exposure to a new canon and specializing in it is indeed a new form of that. It fits in nicely with ruuger's piece, of people watching someone else take something in and finding that in itself enjoyable.

I also liked your mention of following a link to Reddit because there's so many more places now where fandom is scattered. All props to our invaluable su_herald for linking them together! (Those are indeed great posters)

The reactors thing is really interesting as a new tool to explore old fandoms. It's funny, I'm watching Liam Duke watch Angel at the moment, and I was never particularly a fan of AtS, but watching his reactions has made me think about it more positively.

Fandom is so scattered now it's quite the effort to find good stuff, so I'm very grateful to the herald for highlighting things.
