room rating

as i rearranged the bed and began unpacking it hit me that this room is to be my home of homes for the next year and (hopefully) a half, and that for good mental health i should make it as comfortable to live in as i would want to be inside my head. last year i was a total slob and lived in a mostly bare room with my stuff semi-organized about it, ( Read more... )

I use up my summer print quota (or at least try to make a dent in it) by printing pictures and organizing them into little groups or collages on my walls.

Yeah, I remember in twinofmunin's room, the throw rug really did make a huge difference for making the room feel more like a 'home'. Posters and stuff on the walls is also a big step. They don't have to be landscapes; interesting posters of other stuff is good too!

I think the other sense of completeness in twinofmunin's room was the desk with a computer (and lamp) on it, and (wait for it) the VAX grant continuity cards in random locations.

Probably the best way to make the room home is to live in it... You know what I mean.

They don't have to be landscapes

i'm partial to things i have personal association with. on my laptop, each of my four wallpapers (actually 3/4, 4/4 is my goal though) is a picture of something i was involved with (glowstick pattern, cluster rave, wean hall raptors sign (clearly that's the one out of four i wasn't involved in right)) run through enough gimp filters to make them suitable for wallpapers.

so since most of the pictures i take are of landscapes or similar, i was figuring that's what it would end up being.

i don't know if having a desk with computer is for me. maximegalon lived in my room sophomore year, and he had a head and keyboard. last year (and probably this year) the only computer i'll have in the house is my laptop, which i think gives a good sense of balance wrt moving around versus staying in the room.

i hang random crap that i own that i think is neat on the walls. right now there's like a feather boa and a few masks and a raccoon tail. oh and some hats. hats are nice wall decorations.

i've been meaning to get myself an inconspicuous hat (not just suitable for wearing on the underground tour but suitable for being worn by the most awesome dude present). i keep saying, "i will know the right one when i see it", but i have yet to see it. i don't really know where to look.

i've been trying to get rid of random crap over the past few months. perhaps this is a better use for some of it.

Yeah, I'm a big fan -- as has been already suggested -- of using my print quota on pictures to put on my walls, which you probably remember. You can print color 11x17s in the CFA clusters for $1.50 each. At this point I think I have enough to go two photos deep around the entire perimeter of my apartment.

In undergrad, my suitemates and I used to do the poster thing too. I think there's usually a sale here at the UC at the beginning of the year, but I don't know what the prices are like.
