I gotta go with Spoo here. If it's what you want to do (and especially if you can do the program part-time and still work), I'd say go for it.

And I think you're absolutely right about taking some time off school in between.

You'll certainly always have a niche for yourself if you do taxes, which I imagine would be immensely useful and perhaps a bit comforting.

My brother got his law degree, and then went longer for an additional tax degree. I would be happy to see if he would chat with you about it. It seems to have worked out really well for him.

No. If you are going to practice in tax you generally need a Golden Gate Master's or something similar to be truly competent.
