This story gives such dignity to Racetrack, while not taking away any of the complicated moral code that she possessed.

Yay! That's what I was hoping for most. I think Leah Cairns mentioned somewhere that there was a scene scripted where Racetrack got to talk about why she was mutinying a little bit, but for production reasons, they never got to film it. I like to think that that scene would've given Racetrack the dignity she deserves, but in its absence, fic will have to do. ;)

No, that's a fascinating tangent. I don't know what would be the healthier leadership approach on the whole, but yeah, Adama's father-figure-ness had some real dangers to it. Nobody is perfect enough to live up to the image his crew had of him, and because they depended on him so much, that fall from grace was inevitably going to be a hard fall. I'd never thought of this before, but I wonder if maybe the best of all possible worlds would be if Cain had been in charge, but she'd had a child like Lee and a Fleet headed by someone who could go toe-to-toe ( ... )

Wow, I loved that moment when Racetrack read out the list of the dead, and how it ended with Zarek. What a great moment. And a good comparison to the Starbuck moment. I'd forgotten about that scene, so powerful. And it's interesting that Racetrack makes the comparison, given how much she must have hated what Starbuck had become. It's not unlike how she feels about Adama, maybe ( ... )

I loved that moment with the photo in the original so, so much; I may or may not have squealed with glee when I figured out a way to be able to work it into this fic. ;) Thank you so very, very much for writing such a lovely story to remix. Like I said in the author notes, one of my biggest challenges writing this was every time I went back to "Aftermath" to check on a detail, I couldn't help but read a big chunk of it over again, and it never failed to make me weepy. You know I love Gaeta, but I loved how your fic gave Hoshi his own story, his own dignity, and his own hope at the end. I tried to give Racetrack at least a little bit of that, too, so I'm very, very happy you enjoyed it.

Thanks again so very, very much!!

Thanks so much for reading! I cried a fair amount writing this fic, too, though millari's original fic makes me cry buckets every single time I read it.

Oh, Racetrack. This makes me hurt for her, all over again. She had so much hope and now it's all gone.

The little bits and pieces about the AQ--the showers, 'Track losing her boots, how there's no privacy, not really. That there's work crews, and of course black marketeering--all the little bits and pieces that just get assumed in the larger picture. I like how you brought them out here.

Also, Skulls! It was nice to see him getting lines.

And I love the friendship (if it can be called that) between Racetrack and Louis.

(and, ok, there is some glee in the beatdown of the Pegasus guys, too)

Thanks so much for reading! Fleshing out minor characters and dealing with realities of everyday life in the Fleet are two of my favorite things to write about, especially since by their very nature, they're just not the sort of things we saw on the show itself very often. I love that BSG was rich enough that it creates so many good possibilities like these to expand upon.

(And don't feel bad for taking glee in the Sunshine Boys beat-down. I was living pretty vicariously through Racetrack for that one, too.)

Guh, this was brutal and left me with a knot in my gut. Everything about it was so honest and powerful, and it just made me *feel* so much for Racetrack and the others. I've always found it difficult to pin down Racetrack as a character but this fic brought her into focus for me; I really think you got her ( ... )

Thanks so much! Rambly feedback is awesome, so don't apologize. ;)

but this fic brought her into focus for me; I really think you got her.

This pleases me to no end. One of the things I love most about writing fic is trying to make opaque characters accessible and sense-making. I agree that, for as vocal as Racetrack was about her opinions, it did feel like she kept quite a bit under her vest, too. Makes for an interesting character to write.

YOU KILLED GAETA'S MARINE WITH THE PRETTY EYES. D:

I know, I have a nasty habit of doing that. :( But I do like writing him! Next time there's a pornbattle, someone seriously needs to do some Gaeta/Marine w/ Pretty Eyes prompts, if for nothing than to give me the opportunity to make up for my making him my go-to Mutiny Redshirt that Pulls at Heartstrings.

when she beat the crap out of a sunshine boy. IT WAS SO SATISFYING. THANK YOU.I may have been vicariously living through Racetrack a wee bit on that one, too ( ... )
