write a poem called “Seven Sweet Kids and Their Lying, Selfish, Stuck-Up Older Sister” and publish it in the school paper.

Really? That's kinda funny.

I am so sick of people thinking “artistic expression” and “free speech” means getting to say whatever you want immune from criticism or consequences.

Dingdingdingdingding! This! Seriously Mal, you're being an asshole.

she began the project thinking that the only way to be a good writer is to write about your own life experience

Jesus Christ on a pogo stick! Do I even need to point out the time she wrote about anthropomorphic mice being chased by a troll?! Good God, Mallory is stupid! I feel like slamming my head against the wall I'm so mad about this! Seriously Mal, you're a fucking idiot and you'll never succeed as a writer!

I find schoolyard bully Scrooge being haunted by “kid ghosts” kind of a disturbing premise in a play for seriously ill children.Oh, shame! I laughed way too hard at that! I'm going to Hell ( ... )

I second this. I'm in awe of your impressive lolcat collection.

haha, I was just thinking as I wrote this I need to reorganize my lolcats. I actually didn't have any saved until around the time I snarked Slam Book, and to avoid having 20 pages of capslock swearing, I threw in some cats. So now I just have a folder for each book and I start doing increasingly weird google image searches.

For some reason, they decide they need a ride, and Mr. Pike says he can fit everyone. Um. Really? Did he buy his car from Arthur Weasley?

I think that the Pikes are the less awesome version of the Weasleys. Maybe their American cousins or something. Because no one could be as idiotic as Mal is this book without a few confundus charms on them.

Mal is the Percy Weasley of the family. She can be smart when she wants to be, but generally thinks she's too good for the rest of them, and when she thinks she's right on something, like a rule of writing, nothing can convince her to deviate or that she might be...wrong.

Hee, I'm reading this and noticed that Mal's favourite author, at least for this book, is Amelia Moody; nice unsubtle allusion to Ann M. there, Weyn. Or did Ann or one of the others come up with that?

Mal goes beyond annoying and well into creepy and obnoxious territory. Damn, I miss the semi-snarky, quietly intelligent, slightly dorky Mallory who corrected Claudia on the digestive system.

I'm wondering if Ann came up with the idea for this book after an encounter with a Stan-like fan because there's no real reason why Mallory acts like a frigging headcase in this book. Of course, the simplest and most obvious explanation is that Ann hates Mallory, but still.

I, for one, would love to read Mal's Stupid Injuries. I'm particularly intrigued by chapter 8!

Sad to say that I liked this book as a kid. Why? I don't know. Maybe I'm just a Claudia at heart. But now? Just reading that resignation letter gives me secondhand embarrassment. Henrietta must be quite lonely - or a saint - if she's willing to be so kind to someone as entitled and cruel as Mal. Ugh.

Random thing of note - I like how whenever Mal writes stories or plays based around her family, there's never any details about it. The basic plot we hear is always "a girl has to deal with living in a crazy, big family." Even the writers can't think of a way to make it interesting or exciting.

Looking forward to Baby-sitters Remember!
