Mary Anne Breaks the Rules (1-5)

Whoo, it's my first Mary Anne snark! I don't like Mary Anne at the best of times (despite my own personality being a cross between her and Claudia), but I kind of really felt bad for her in this book. This is one of THOSE books, where the "best friends you'll ever have" act like complete and utter henious bitches towards one of their members (see ( Read more... )

Mary Anne has had a long habit of using her mom for sympathy and to win things. She understands how it feels when parents divorce because her mom died before she knew what it was like to have two parents in the same house and so does't know what that kind of upheaval is really like, but because her mom died when she was a baby, somehow she understands more and has it worse. Somehow that gives her insight into every type of parental change and single parent struggle there is, even though her dad was wealthy all her life and never had to worry about how to make the housing payment ( ... )

I remember not really liking this book even as a kid, when the BSC could do no wrong.

I'm not surprised that Mary Anne thinks "Japanese-American" is a personality trait. After all, one of Jessi's defining traits is the fact that she's black. As for Stacey being good-natured because she's diabetic... whaa? No, really, that makes no sense whatsoever. Sometimes I can sort of get what the ghostwriters were going for, but I cannot follow their logic on this one at all.

My cat, Rajah does the same thing to me in the morning. Only he headbutts me and purrs like a motor. He's a sweet tabby.

That's what Andy does to me. xD Is this an orange tabby thing?

I'm not sure. Rajah is grey with brown stripes and white paws.

I can't stand people who get preachy about food

A-freakin'-men to that! Have you ever read fucknovegans on Tumblr? Those people are mental! It's perfectly fine if you want to eat healthy and all that song and dance but yelling at people and saying they deserve cancer and rape for their eating habits? Scum of the Earth. And don't even get me started on the ones who make their cats and dogs vegan. Against animal cruelty my ass.

Deserve rape for their eating habits? Oh lord.

Dogs can eat vegan, though it's tricky, but cats are obligate carnivores. They must have animal-based taurine or they will die. No meat for a cat should be considered abuse. I've got several vegan friends I've asked (every time I find out a friend is vegan, I ask about cats and dogs being vegan, and it's always dog is you're careful, and cats no way).

While I agree that she does use it for sympathy, I don't think the fact that she grew up motherless means she doesn't grieve. It's when she inserts "But but I don't have a mother! D:" into situations that are not about her that it gets problematic. Mary Anne had to grow up seeing friends and classmates with their moms, as well as people on TV, Mother's Day propaganda and commercials everywhere...it's hard. My grandma died when I was a newborn. For 20 years of my life, I did not even think of my grandma...until I started seeing a lot of my best friend's grandma. Suddenly, I am constantly longing for my own, wishing I'd known her, wanting her to come back as a ghost, lamenting that she's gone, etc. It's really, really hard to see other people being happy and loved by their mothers/grandmas/fathers/etc when you know you will never get to experience that love because yours is gone.
