I can understand how Hayes feels about movie and TV adaptations changing the whole spirit of a character. I recently read a manga by this Japanese teacher for foreigners in Japan, who wanted to tell people about all the cool, little-known things about the Japanese language that she found out about when her students asked "But why does Japanese work like that?" She agreed to have it turned into a TV show and the screenwriters turned her character into a bubbleheaded idiot and most of the foreigners into overgrown children.

I'm a writer though not a published author yet (it'd be fun if that'd change, but first I need to write stories for something other than catharsis and go back to my big novella project) and you know how many stories reference my personal life at all?

Two.

Know how many stories, serials, anthologies, I have?

About seven.

Mallory's a bit delusional in this book...an author doesn't HAVE to write about her personal life. Especially not a children's author, which is what she wants to be.
