#114 - The Secret Life of Mary Anne Spier

Dec 16, 2009 22:35

Hey all, I'm trying my hand at snarking again. My first attempt was way back in early 2008 and I sadly never finished it as I lost my muse. But that's not going to happen this time, I promise. :D ( Read more... )

Wait, so if MA HAD all that cash saved, why did she need Richard's card in the first place? I mean, she couldn't have bought all she did, but still. Seems less complicated. And, you know, I still don't see how a thirteen-year-old could use a credit card. If I were a salesgirl I would have assumed MA stole her dad's card.

I have never understood the plot point in books where Kid A is using their parents credit cards for normal shopping purchases and adventures. Maybe it is an Australian thing here, but any kid here trying to use a credit card would most likely have it conficated off them and possibly authorities called.

It can't be an Australian thing, because I never understood it either. I remember scratching my head over Richard handing her his credit card to buy a new outfit for her first dance with Logan. I could have understood handing her a fifty-dollar bill or something, but a credit card? Do the Stoneybrook retailers not check signatures or something?

Maybe it was different here back in the day, but I'm American and can't imagine it either.

When I was a kiddie, my brain would boggle at kids using their parents' credit cards. I assumed it was an American thing, since I'm Australian, like I did with most things I didn't understand. Now that I'm older, I realise it's usually an AMM or ghostwriter FAIL! thing.

I was in the rich people's mall here at one point last year and I saw a girl, maybe fourteen, pay for a HUGE purchase at H&M with her parent's credit card. It totaled well over $250, which you know at H&M is a SHIT TON of clothes. The cashier didn't bat an eye over the credit card, just asked, "did you get permission?" First time I'd ever seen that. I chalked it up to the girl's prep-school uniform.

Also, I'm gonna defend Richard. Because I kinda love him, and I don't think he gets enough credit as a good dad. Totally charge your kid interest, it'll teach her responsibility. But yeah, the beef and tofu thing is just fail.

I never read this book, but when I read a previous snark of it I remember being completely annoyed at the fact that Mary Anne bought her best friend and a girl she didn't know well the same gift. I'm sure they sell soccer balls in the same store where she got the glove?

Also, just because Mal has lots of siblings, why does MA think she'd want to put photos of her siblings in an album? Knowing Mal, I'd think she'd want to put pictures of horses and her dibbly chilly friends in it.

The Connecticut Ballet is in Stamford, and tickets for their cheap seats to the Nutcracker are $20. I don't know, but this seems like a rather personal gift to me, something your parents or your boyfriend would get you. Plus, if Jessi is such a ballerina, I'm surprised she hadn't bought tickets to see it already (or isn't starring in it!).

I was in middle school in the early-mid '90s, and my friends and I bought each other scrunchies and cheap earrings and cassette singles for Christmas - I'm sure we didn't spend $30-$40 on each other!

Also, Kristy isn't a catcher, is she? I thought she played infield. Correct me if I'm wrong, and I guess a catcher's mitt isn't a bad thing to have, but it seems like the ghostwriter was all "need random sport item..."

I'm in college and my friends and I have a $15 limit on our presents! Maybe we're just cheap... lol

I know this is pretty much the same comment as I made to the BSC Very Special Christmas snark, but I always thought the mitt was an odd gift for a girl to get her best friend. Kristy probably already has a mitt, that she has broken in and is comfortable with. I was so WTF about that that I completely missed the WTFery that is MA getting Abby the same gift because she doesn't know her very well!! Kristy's mitt feels more like something a rich relative of Watson's would buy, who has never met her, but is coming for Christmas, and has to buy present and all he has is a random description - Kristy, girl, 13, likes sports. Hey like chapter 2! :)
