Re: name: Every so often we get the 'Xander...like from Buffy???' question, to which we reply, yeah, we are that geeky, actually. In the NICU, the next baby over was named Alejandro, so we joked there was a run on variations on Alex this week.
Um, yes, sleep. Some of that would be nice. Possibly in a regular bed. Two grown women very barely fit in one hospital bed, in case you were wondering, and only because one of them is hella skinny.
Is "hella skinny" AGAIN, you mean? And what about if you put an (admittedly tiny) badass kid between you -- is there hope for the poor hospital bed then? Just kidding. I love you both, and I'm glad to get a vicarious after-the-fact version of the experience. I'm sure I'll get there myself eventually, but for the moment I'll leave the hard-core labor up to crazy folks like Katie. Condrunkulations on your kid, and your wife, and your happiness. I'm sure it will continue as your Life With Kid proceeds to bloom into full beauty :)
Everyone should be proud of Kate. She was willing to totally deviate from her birth plan in every way in light of new evidence, she did things that totally terrified her (ie epidural), and she managed to get a baby who was stuck the totally wrong way down into position to be able to do the vacuum extraction, avoiding a section by about ten minutes. She totally rocked it. She's amazing.
OMG! He's Beautiful! You *all* look beautiful! And Tiny! and OMG! and I'm so proud, and happy, and excited! I'm glad Kate didn't have to have a section, too, but 36 hours is hardcore, no matter how you slice that one, especially with all that time on the drip. STRONG Mommy *and* Mama. We <3 you guys. Jason is going to be so squealie to wake up on *his* birthday to see pictures of Xander on his. Squee!
36 hours doesn't even touch it--looking back on it, she was probably in labor from Sunday on at least; her contractions never got regular, even on pit, because Xander's head was in the wrong position (sunnyside up, neck flexed, and with HIS FIST UNDER HIS CHIN. YES, MY SON DECIDED THAT HIS FOREHEAD AND HAND SHOULD COME THROUGH THE CERVIX SIMULTANEOUSLY. SMRT.), so those irregular contractions somewhere between ten and four minutes apart were probably part of actual labor. It was 36 hours from rupture to birth--well, 36:30 or so. We were about ten minutes from a section; Kate just barely managed to push him down to plus two right as the OB got there. Xander was so stuck that the vacuum cap popped off the first two times (with Kate pushing as hard as she could and a grown-ass man pulling as hard as he could) but the third time they managed to pop him out
( ... )
Oh, I know that baby position well, lol. Sunnysideup, grown-ass mann with a vacuum... yup. And like you said earlier, it takes a lot of strength to deviate from your birth plan and roll with it hen your dude's just not doing it the way you want! I will probably be back on liquid diet on thanksgiving, but jase is reading over my shoulder going, OMG, MOM, THANKSGIVING!!! I'M GONNA BE THE BEST COUSIN EVAR. so, thanksgiving it is :-)
I just squeeeed all over your flickr, but yeah--more squeeing to be had! Xander is gorgeous! 36 hours of labor? Kate is my hero and you are totally badass. I can't imagine! Xander is perfect in every way. You both did a mighty fine job. I hope Kate is feeling okay, and I hope you're both getting some rest...hahahaha. I know it's impossible, but like I said, it was a "hope". So much beauty here. And btw, that Ben Folds quote totally teared me up. One more time: he's so gorgeous! Congratulations and much love! Welcome to Motherhood. It's pretty damn awesome. <3
Kate is my hero too--she was amazing. And BFing is going pretty well, I think now that we're out of the NICU trap.
That song was on our labor playlist--before things got bad, we sat around and sang it to each other, while she rolled her way through contractions on the labor ball.

Congratulations to you both. And cupcakes!
I hope you can get some rest. Rumor has it that you'll need it...
