Does the plastic really affect the light that much? I've never noticed that, but then, I don't paint in the house.

Well, what they had up would, as it was black! We have plastic sheeting over the window in our bathroom, which Susannah's previous flatmate put up, and it's all opaque and billowy, although that could be because it's old and falling down.
