It started out to be quite a week. We had our conference mocks, and our legal research assessment was released to us last Friday.
Oh, and on Monday I locked myself out.
I went shopping at Sainsbury's and somewhere between the grocery store and home, via the C11 bus, I dropped my change purse. It had around £15 in it (which I can ill afford to lose, given the dire, red state of my budget), some screwed up receipts, and my house keys. Luckily my school locker key and, more unusually, my bike lock keys were rattling around loose in my handbag, so I still have them.
I didn't realise till I got home at around twenty to eight. Susannah had already told me she was out that night, but I rang anyway. Her phone was off. I left a message. I didn't feel I could go anywhere -- I didn't want to spend money and I had heavy bags of groceries with me in addition to my wheelie suitcase full of books.
Luckily one of the boys who live downstairs came home within about fifteen minues. He let me into our building, then said, "I'd invite you inside for a cup of tea or coffee but the place is so messy I'd be embarrassed." I said that was OK, I was happy just to be in from the cold, and settled down on the stairs to do the Sudoku in the Guardian.
Then I heard banging from inside the flat. Then a hoover! Ten minutes later he reappeared and said, "I've cleaned up, so, um, you could come in if you like." I was furnished with tea and permitted to sit comfortably and watch television until Susannah showed up just after ten o'clock, which was all very sweet.
Their flat is as cold as ours. In fact, they say they actually have a hole in one of their windows, but as they are all covered with plastic sheeting for insulation (a solution which would be unworkable for us, as Susannah needs natural light for her painting) I didn't actually see where or how big this hole was, and I didn't question them about whether or not it was there when they moved in, and if not, how it came to be there.
I got new keys cut on Wednesday -- two sets -- another hole in the budget. I've suggested leaving one set with the boys to Susannah but she seems slightly nervous they might use them. I have no idea why they would though!
The other thing I think is that our two flats ought to join forces in dealing with the landlord and telling him that the insulation situation is simply unacceptable. Hm...
