Protests of Salman Rushdie's knighthoodI understood the protests about the Pope's speech. I understood the protests about the cartoons. I think in both cases, the Pope and the cartoonist had the right to express themselves as they saw fit, but I understood the protests ( Read more... )

He said what?

It is understandable that deeply religious people would be affronted by Satanic Verses, especially without the loophole afforded by a reading backed up with the knowledge that if the narrator is Satan, he is possibly not the most trustworthy of all narrators. The attention they give the book and the degree to which they protest seems so completely out of proportion, and every time Rushdie appears in the media with such a headline, the more so. I mean, I have to put up with sparklified!Jeebus or Action!Figure Vengeance!Jesus (TM) imports every day without crying for blood and people being blown up on planes.
That "slap in the face" is clearly self-inflicted.
