So my GM wants to meet me on Friday for breakfast. He told me that my character can't be lost because she is too important to the story. He wants me to bring copies of my character info so a new player he just invited can play that character, now that I'm gone. I feel horrible about it. I felt a sense of ownership regarding that character, and now ( Read more... )

Thanks. Sean is a creative writer, (or used to be many years ago) but he has never been a gamer. I think he relates to this by comparing it to quitting a job; the "employer" needs to hire someone else to take my place. I was crying last night, and Sean didn't understand why I was so upset. After all, I was the one who quit the game in the first place.

I sent a text message to the GM telling him I felt very hurt by his decision. No response. I guess I'll see him on Friday.

I'm not a gamer, but I have seen enough gaming and overheard enough gaming-related conversations to know that characters can be incredibly personal. To be honest, my first reaction would be to tell the GM that it sucks but your character is your creation and you don't want to share. That is probably not the most productive response (and is likely to burn some bridges if the GM gets upset), but ugh ...

Could you talk to the GM about wanting to be able to return to the game with your character in the future, and how giving the character over to someone new would make you feel pushed out of the game? In any case, you can disregard all the random solutions I am trying to come up with and just know that I don't think it's at all strange for you to feel this way.

I think I will talk to the GM on Friday about how this decision makes me feel. I want him to know that I feel like I wouldn't be welcomed back into the game someday. Sometimes he can react in petty, immature ways, and I hope this isn't one of those instances. I feel like he must understand on some level that this is an insensitive thing to do.

Other gamers I talked to were similarly shocked. They said, couldn't he invent a twin? A doppelganger? A long-lost cousin? They didn't understand why the GM had to give MY character to someone else.

I don't know if he'll go along with any of my suggestions. He can be stubborn sometimes.

Thank you for replying. I appreciate the support.
