Myers-Briggs May Have Gotten It Right...Where Forum Fights Are Concerned, Anyway.

Jul 29, 2007 00:52

I get all kinds of shit from my family for answering honestly when they ask me things. Like, "How are you?"

Well, okay, then. Don't ask me anything if a less-than-bubbly response is going to chafe your serenity. Because you are going to get the truth, and nothing but.

Usually my answer is "busy, tired, but alive," or some variation thereof. They don' ( Read more... )

Good lord, that just renews my lack of faith in humanity.

Having taken a few online versions of the Myers-Briggs test, I feel fairly safe in saying that I'm usually an INFP, though I have been equally scored as INFJ. The interesting thing, though, is that I score so close to the middle that I can work as just about any of the types.
I don't go in much for forums, as I personally cannot stand the bickering and arguing and carrying-on that inevitably happens because someone got beaten out of a Moderatorship by someone else and claims the Forum Owner is playing favorites. (Yes, politics annoys me, always has.) But I suppose a decently balanced forum would work - not that I've seen one, and most of those I've been on have been primarily role-playing with a section off to the side for random topic discussion. hopefully with people who are actually calm enough not to fly into a fuss simply because someone doesn't agree with them on whatever point.

If any of that makes sense at all.

Chan board?

It seems 4chan is feuding every week.

No, but an excellent guess. Actually, you posted before I finished my post (below), and I namedropped 4chan.

Great minds think alike!

(I have very, very rarely joined the ranks of Anonymous, preferring to LURK MOAR, but, as you may note from previous journal entries, to do speak fluent /b/tardo. No Invasions or pr0n for me, though.)

WHAT IF most forum fights come down to a deeply-ingrained personality clash that divides along Thinking/Feeling lines?

I would think that most forum fights are either clashes between tees and effs or clashes between effs of opposite hues. To get into a scorched-earth flame war, strong emotions are almost a requirement.

(Although, it would be interesting to see where trolls test out on the thinking/feeling spectrum.)

I had never taken a Myers-Briggs test before. Thanks for providing the link. :)

I don't agree with you on this one. I realise that we're both reasonably neutral in this, but with you leaning more towards the side of MATY and me leaning more towards the side of wherever the hell that freaky bullshit isn't.

I am quite aware that there was a lot of bullshit going on on both sides and I'm not going to dispute that.

The bit that freaked me out with MATY was not the whole shitfight in general - I've been there long enough to expect that. It was the way that it was constant foam-foam-foam for so long I couldn't find the actual content in the board without having to wade through factioning waist-deep and then suddenly it was gone, literally overnight.

The thing is that I had pretty much decided from the bullshit that was just on MATY that those guys were insane & beyond redemption, and then when I was reading the sudden calm rationalising, I found myself nodding sagely. And then I said 'hang on, just yesterday these same people were foaming hypocritical lunatics.' And that's pretty much where it falls down for me. ( ... )

Excellent points.

Yeah, the foaming at the mouth crap was really over the top.

And I completely agree with the "disagree but have no personal animosity" deal. That's how we roll, baby. We just don't take disagreement as personally, I suppose.

Me, I LIKE to see how others think, and I not so married to my opinions that I refuse to entertain more input, when appropriate. There are very. very few things I am firmly convinced about to the point where opposing opinions aren't welcome. VERY few. And even then, I still think people have a right to think differently. I may not ever change my mind, or even wish to get into a debate about certain topics, but that doesn't mean I automatically hate people who don't agree.

Or, when/if it ever happens, people who can out-debate me on a topic I care about and know about. ;)

So, yeah, we're cool. As if it would be otherwise! You still mah homey, floopy. (LOL)

I think I've seen this particular forum meltdown three or four times ;). It's always funny to me how these sorts of "coming together" things inevitably become "but only if you're like me" things ( ... )

wow.

Interestingly (or not), I'm an INTJ, and I generally avoid forums like the plague. Even on LJ, I lurk more than not... just don't have enough patience for the drama.

I go through phases and get bored with dumbassery very quickly.

I think being INTJ encourages me to be a Serial Obsessive, and to move on when I love interest in things.
