Enough is enough, and enough is too much

So, there's this situation that's been kind of quietly (if your definition of "quietly" includes wank_report and fandom_wank, that is) brewing for the past several weeks, between a former therealljidol contestant and... well, nobody really seems to know. Is it spnanonhaven? spnpermanon? Anonymous commenters in general? (If you figure out exactly what started the whole thing, please ( Read more... )

rant: bullshit!, rant: what the ever-living fuck?, rant: pissed as hell

I'm normally not one to call anyone out directly, and very rarely by name, but I had to make an exception here. The level of "not getting it" in those comments is just rage-inducing. And I think what bothers me the most is how much of it feels intentional - like she knows exactly what she's doing and how much hurt she's causing, but she just honestly doesn't care.

I have to say, nothing irritates me more when people dismiss their prejudice with 'oh, but I have friends that are X and X, so that makes it okay'. NO. NO IT DOESN'T.

incidentally my best friend is black; when I first adjusted my thinking about white privilege she gave me a lot of help/comfort by letting me talk to her about it. But the way I see it, having friends that are PoC or disabled or whatever should make you want to be less prejudiced, not excuse your behavior ...

... I have the urge to embroil myself in this wank, but on the other hand she'll steal my credit card information because I disagreed with her on a public entry. ;)

She locked her LJ up right before I hit "post" on this, actually, so you can't get involved now. She says she'll open it up again after the first of the year, but I don't think she will. People were starting to tell her what they thought with their usernames attached, and I don't think she was prepared for that. I don't think she saw that coming.

You... are awesome. I've been scratching my head since her first rant, and I'm still not sure I've understood a comment she's made.

I am particularly WTFing about this.

Yeah, that particular comment was edited two or three times in those first ten minutes it was there, which is kind of odd.

Like I said above, I just don't think she was prepared for people to actually use their usernames when they engaged her, so she locked it up to let it die down. Which seems to be working, actually, because I haven't seen a word about the whole thing since 3:00 this morning.

There's not much logical about it, at least not to me. I mean, I've seen people use those particular lines of defense before, but never quite so blatantly and unapologetically.
