I think you're on to something!

It could be that something is taking Sam over at critical moments, and that when he's relaxed (which seems to be almost never this season) he's more "Sam" than when there's stuff going on.

In that way, it would make sense that Sam wanted Dean around, and also that it took a year to get him to that point. It might also explain the way Sam seemed to go from wanting to keep Dean out of it to wanting him around. If the real Sam is able to influence actions at any point, he would want the one person who knows him best around to see that he's NOT himself.

Hmm. I guess we'll have to wait and see...

This is an interesting theory. I think next week's episode will give us a lot more clues as to whether it's valid, too.

Interesting theory, and one that fits pretty well.

I'm immune to Sam's looks, so I can write without being blinded by 'the gorgeousuness' (hee!) but I reckon you may be right. Every time I think he's fair dinkum evil, he does something that makes me think no, he's not. So a kind of dissociation between him and something Not Him makes all kinds of sense.

Hmmmmm, Multiple Personality Disorder caused by a stay in the Devil's Bottomless Pit Trap?

I can get with that!
