Another really hard thing is the relative value of the animal. I mean, horses are not only expensive to buy and maintain, but they have truly distinct personalities. They may be herd animals, but they are each incredibly unique spiritually and psychologically. If a neighbor's dog killed some of my chickens I'd be angry, but not nearly as hurt as if I lost a dog or a cat or a horse. Yes, they'd still have to compensate me for it, but the trauma and emotional duress would be much less. Horses live a long time and losing a horse is like losing a family member. Not cool.

We had to put down my old Dog. That was just awful and i didn't even have to so it myself. I can't imagine what that would have been like. This is where i'm so glad i'm a city girl. I could hack it out there i'd be a big blubbering (vegetarian) mess.
