A Mule in the Courtyard and a Tragedy on the Road

Oct 07, 2010 16:41

I finally found my ESB cord and was going to post a pic spam post of chickens, etc., but something happened last night to change it. Starting at about 10:30PM Andrew and I heard the horses, mule, and donkey next door making as much noise as humanly (equinely?) possible. We also heard coyotes, so we assumed that they were just alarming because of ( Read more... )

That is terribly sad. I hate when animals have to be put down, and I couldn't imagine having to watch the poor thing suffer. We lost a foul quite a number of years ago to a coyote and the mare (the mother) tore her leg up on the fence trying to get away. She survived though, but it took a lot of tlc to get her back to normal. I'm sorry to hear that Lou couldn't be helped in time. Lou was such a beautiful horse, and I do hope that Charlie gets compensated in some way for her loss.

Thanks! And the poor foal! The poor mom. Horses are interesting because they have such complex (almost human-like) psychologies. they certainly do mourn, don't they?

Lefty (the buckskin who I adore) spend all of Thursday, staring across the fence at place where Lou's body lay and neighing. (He was like her boyfriend.) He's really distraught, poor thing. He stayed for the whole burial, too.

What a horrible thing to have happened. That poor, beautiful horse. I feel terrible for your friend, too.

We're very conscious of closing gates, but the kid who does chores in the afternoon has twice left a gate open and some of the alpacas have run out. There are pick-up trucks driving through our property on their way to the gravel pit in back, and we're close to a busy road - things could get very bad very fast when those boys are out running around. I couldn't bear it if we had something happen here as it happened to your friend.

Wow! I hope nothing bad ever DOES happen!

We all forget to close gates sometimes (or, in my case, I've tried to close it and failed to latch it properly.)

Oh, that's just heartbreaking. I've always lived in a rural area, so I know the importance of closing gates. Despite this, people always leave the gate at the top of our driveway open, so I have to check before I ever open the door in case Merlin gets on the road. People are so thoughtless, I always think that you should leave something in the manner that you found it - if the gate was closed when you came upon it, close it as you leave!

Then again, I feel sorry for the guy, what an awful thing to have on your conscience; the death of such a beautiful animal. I'm sure he will have learned his lesson, just sadly too late for Lou.

That was very well put and I certainly hope that sweet Merlin never ends up on the road!

I totally agree about gates. And things can get IN as well as out. We have coyotes and coy dogs and all sorts of things people might not want on their property. Frankly, that was one of the biggest concerns about Malcolm. We could keep him IN with an electric fence, but we couldn't keep other things out.
