I can imagine Sam having a minor freakout when confronted with expectations from his past, looking at himself through Stanford eyes and seeing...the hunter.
But Dean's right. I know someone who did law because they wanted to save the world. Their most commonly used phrase now is, 'The law is about what's legal, not what's right.' Good choice, Sam! :D
I feel like that's something everyone goes through when they reach the age the boys are reaching now. It's not like they're going to any high-school reunions, so this was probably the only way they would be confronted by all that stuff, and I think at some point you have to address old-you's expectations and reconcile them to the reality you eventually lived.

It must hurt like a sonofabitch seeing himself through eyes that were essentially still innocent, despite the crap he'd already witnessed/been a part of! Good for Dean for giving him a shove in the right direction!
