A friend of mine said this to me regarding BD and I totally agree with her..
I think SM decided to take the characters somewhere they didn't want to go and they abandoned her. She was left on her own to write without their true voices in her head (with the exception of Seth who is game for anything) and she simply wasn't up to the task.
I was so afraid I was the only one and that maybe I just wasn't coming at it from the right angle. I think your idea about taking them somewhere else is an even better description of the book. Jacob was fine to me in the book, but it seemed like everyone else was just so far from center that it didn't make sense.
I hated to say it, because I loved LOVED the rest of the books, but this one just didn't do it for me.
