What about adding salt to the water, would it help purifying the toothbrush? I'm not sure why, the idea just popped into my head.

If it makes you feel any better, in those TV shows when they measure the amount of germs and growth rate, I seem to recall it usually shows the toilet is far more sanitized and clean than e.g. a public computer keyboard or the floors.
