We have different tastes, you and I

"You're an idiot."

That is approximately what I hear when I say that I like a thing and someone disagrees with me by saying, "Oh, no! That thing you like is horrible!"

"Oh no! That thing you like is ridiculous!"

"Oh no! You call that MUSIC? It's trash!"

In other words, (the way I hear it), "You are incredibly stupid for liking the thing you like."

I hear the same thing sometimes, but I forget myself when I'm reacting to other people sometimes. Thanks for the reminder, Geena :)

It's getting that way around Indiana, but mostly about political stuff. OK, so maybe that's not new and I'm just now noticing it. You agree/disagree with something a politician has done, you're sure to be called an idiot.

I wish people would learn that seeing different views can broaden a person's way of thinking. It doesn't matter what the subject.

But what do I know? I'm an idiot. ;)

It's not a minor difference to me... "That song is pure garbage" is, to me, a comment about the song and nothing else. I see it as completely different from "You're an idiot who doesn't know music from garbage."

I do agree with you on the parenthetical extra example, though, because the comment from the woman who didn't like the song was a comment about a group your friend belongs to ("gay people") - or, perhaps more to the point, it was a comment about what people with "good taste" should or shouldn't think about the song - rather than a comment about the song itself.

That blue coat and red hat probably WAS me! You could definitely have stopped me to say hello...I was with one of the therapists on the team and we were on our way to a meeting, but we were early.

(That terrific red hat, by the way, was mailed to me all the way from Indiana by my LJ friend arian_diana, whom I've never met in person but who was so kind to send me a package with hats and bookmarks she'd crocheted. Reminds me of a nice LJ person who once gave a poor newly-arrived American girl a mobile telephone....)
