Skimming

Having untrustworthy internet has caused me to change the way I use the internet. Sometimes we have a whole uninterrupted hour or two, but most of the time it's five or ten minutes of interneting before the signal strength craps out and then it's a fight to try to get back online again ( Read more... )

I have no internet connection when we are on the boat. I rely on the very occasional port that had a free wireless connection so while aboard, I get a total break from being online and find it only beneficial. And re-prioritise is an excellent word to use as you do stop and think about what you do online and how it impacts on your day to day life. That cabin is sounding more and more right for you guys.

It truly is right for us. We just had a lovely visit from Jacqui and Daniel, and they too commented several times about how very right this place is for Björn and me.

For my purposes, though, the internet is my main link to family in the states. So it's not an option to be completely free of it, but so far so good with what we have at the cabin.

Plus I get lots of great new recipes challenges by reading certain blogs. Ahem.

Connection today seems pretty stable, so I'll take this chance to let you know that I'm reading you - and feeling very mommerly towards you these days. ;)

I love your new way too! You are prioritizing what is important to you. You can't get better than that!

I love the fact that you have moved to the cabin. I remember the first time I saw photo's you posted of it and thought what a dream place to be. I am not sure what will happen when you get BIG snow...... but somehow I am sure you will get through it.

I met a man today who lives completely on the 'catch' of the day and his garden. Very interesting and I plan to talk more with him when we are moved into our new office space because he is right across the street!

Hugs to you and your man!
love,
Linda

Thanks, Linda!

No worries about BIG snow. Before I moved to Sweden I thought I'd be living a significant part of the year in BIG snow, but the reality here in the southern region of Sweden is that it doesn't snow so very often and when it does, it's manageable.

Just lately, when things have been so unpleasant at work, I've thought a lot about how one could live the way you describe - a good garden and a fishing pond...and we do have all those cows that graze in our "front yard"...and I did learn how to save for retirement from my mama so I have a nice little cushion there...I could pick up a little extra money sewing for people...

Yeah, it's tempting to live the truly simple life.

When I was so busy at uni trying to get everything done in time I just did what you're doing now. It's actually not that hard to sort of keep on top of things just through skimming, I found that a lot of stuff that I'd been reading very thoroughly I didn't really mind 'missing out on'. Now that I do have the time though I enjoy being online 'properly' again, but if I had to cut down my hours again I could very easily do it.

Can you even read my entries? I was looking on my profile page the other day and noticed that I've got you listed as a friend, but not a mutual one so don't know whether that means you can still read or not. :/

I would have thought I was reading you but I don't see how I could have been. You changed your journal from something else, yes? Anyway, adding you now.

I changed journals completely back in Feb this year. I did a username change a few months later, but that shouldn't affect the account as such as everything stays the way it was pre-name change aside from the name itself. LJ is weird sometimes, it works in very mysterious ways!

Your internet connection at the cabin approximates my available time on the computer at home on the weekends with the two kids. I just had a teary visit from Ingrid, who could not be consoled by G, after Anders accidentally whacked her in the face with his guitar when he spun around. Then Anders had to come in and tell me his version of events. A comment that should take half a minute to write takes 10. And if I had my pre-DSL connection, it simply wouldn't get written at all.
