One of my uber-authentic history buff friends posted a link to a photo album. I gather that one of the big SCA events (possibly coronation?) happened at the old Higgins Armory yesterday. And I'm flipping through the photos, and while a lot of them are great, a lot of them aren't ( Read more... )

I spent the day with two ladies who attended Coronation, and they remarked on the selfsame things you just did. :(

I feel the same way, alas there's no other option for a non-combatant in my neck of the woods, so... the SCA is it.

I have days I hate the SCA (and I'm a kingdom officer, and peer- I'm part of the system.)

I have to remind myself that authenticity is a spectrum, and people are looking for different things. There are several people who really walk the walk, and then there are people who are there to have fun.

You can find a niche, if you're so inclined.

And the point is to be very welcoming- the minimum standards are minimum so anyone can come and join, without feeling like they have to be vetted. (And yet, there's STILL the crew that insist we're all garb naz&&**)

Oh, I know. It's a big tent organization. The trick is finding your own corner of the tent.

I've been observing the SCA from the fringes since I went to my first event back in 1984 or 85. I've got three editions of the Known World Handbook on my bookshelf. I've been going to Birka since back when it was still at the Portsmouth High School (that was probably back in the early 90s). I lurked a buncha SCA Live Journals back before everyone defected. At one point I even went so far as to subscribe to the East Kingdom list for a while (that didn't last long though). There are parts of the SCA that are really attractive to me. But there are also things that I know drive me nuts. So I'll probably continue to hover around the edges, attending the occasional event and occasionally making snarky comments over here where most people can't hear me.
