I have to remind myself that authenticity is a spectrum, and people are looking for different things. There are several people who really walk the walk, and then there are people who are there to have fun.
You can find a niche, if you're so inclined.

I've been observing the SCA from the fringes since I went to my first event back in 1984 or 85. I've got three editions of the Known World Handbook on my bookshelf. I've been going to Birka since back when it was still at the Portsmouth High School (that was probably back in the early 90s). I lurked a buncha SCA Live Journals back before everyone defected. At one point I even went so far as to subscribe to the East Kingdom list for a while (that didn't last long though). There are parts of the SCA that are really attractive to me. But there are also things that I know drive me nuts. So I'll probably continue to hover around the edges, attending the occasional event and occasionally making snarky comments over here where most people can't hear me.
