I had a thought about fandom....

I'm starting to wonder if fandom actually prefers badly written (or underdeveloped) characters because it gives them more freedom to imagine? I mean, it's easier to create your own story or art (or put yourself into the story) if things are vague and you can make things up as you go along without having to worry too much about being told "you're ( Read more... )

fandom, thinky thoughts, fanfiction

Exactomundo! :-) Maybe people identify with that character and need more of a back story.

I still don't get Slash.

There are already over 400 fanfiction stories for Pacific Rim over on Archive of Our Own. And a whole bunch of them are about the minor characters. The two nerd mad scientists have 80, and the Russian couple has over 20!

I still don't get Slash.

Neither do I honey, neither do I.

Could be. However, you can usually (not always) track that kind of writing by age group. Young teens and early twenties really seem to love it (I distinctly recall the furor over the elf that tried to keep Arwen from going back to Imladris). Understandable, I suppose. There's all kinds of physiological and social reasons they are drawn to it. I've especially noticed it's true of the pretty men: usually slender and very clean featured. Maybe because they look like they're 15? Those are the places the massive fandoms seem to congregate anyway.

Although this does not explain the middle aged women fantasizing about slash. I find that mindboggling. Whatever floats your boat, I suppose. At least they're pretty clear when they mark their stories.

That elf? Would be Figwit. (It's frightening that 1) I know that and 2) still remember the name all these years later!)

I have no idea how old anyone is over on Tumblr. I'm at the point where I've started to just assume everyone is a teenybopper until proven otherwise. =P At least here on Live Journal I know the interface well enough to know where to look for people's profile if I want to know more about them. Tumblr? Still a mystery to me.

And yeah, slash still baffles me. But I'm trying to make peace with not understanding it.

Figwit?! Seriously?!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Whooo! No idea why I think that's so hilarious but I do.

What an awful name.

The hilarity of it all just may be why I can remember it. =P
