1970s Laff-A-Lympics comics: Better than the actual show!

Aug 03, 2012 15:12

So, I got two Laff-A-Lympics comic books for the heck of it a few months back. And I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the books are a thousand times better than the cartoon they're based on!
[ see my review of the cartoon here]

While the cartoon never took advantage of the cross-over element (it opted to show all these characters playing boring sports contests instead :P); the comics show all the different characters teaming up, going on adventures, and bringing in side characters from the various shows. Unlike the boring TV show, the Laff-A-Lympics comics are actually fun. And I wanted to share two of them here so you can see for yourself.

Issue #8 (1978)
The Laff-A-Lympics go to Bagdad! With special guest stars Velma Dinkley, Daphne Blake, and Fred Jones!

This issue didn't have many ads that I hadn't already scanned. So you only get one

And here's a nice little "behind the scenes" article about the cartoon and the characters

I love Hokey Wolf's and Dingaling's origin story!

Issue #11
With Special Guest Star Elroy Jetson!!

=====

I like how the comic book writers actually tried to explain why a character from the future was interacting with "present day" characters. The actual cartoon didn't show that much effort (Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble sometimes appeared as announcers and the cartoon writers never bothered to try and make their presence logical).

Wait! How the hell does Yogi know who Elroy is? Is he a Time Lord or something?

And here's an article about all the Hanna Barbera characters from different time periods:

The ads in this book were...strange. And one of them was mildly offensive.

"BUY OUR GUN, KIDS!! It's so realistic, the cops wont be able to tell that it's a toy!!!"

It's from Europe, you guys. EUROPE!!!!!

And here's one of those hokey old Hostess ads:

"Sexy" posters for sale. FOR KIDS!!:

Wait! Why is there a Grizzly Adams poster among the sexy celebrities!!? I know it was the 70s; but I just can't believe that any kid or teenager found that thing attractive!! >_<
.....that said, I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see the Sexy Clint Eastwood poster in the ad. XD

I'm not even a Star Wars fan, but OMG I want those toys and jewelry pieces!! ^_^

And now for the offensive one...

Specifically...

WHY WOULD YOU EVEN WANT ONE OF THOSE!!?!??!!! WHY IS THIS IS A KIDS' BOOK!? WHY!!?!?!? O_o

Once I have more disposable income, I plan to get more issues of this book. :)
