This.

I love S6!Castiel so much. His guilt for those regrettable things is palpable, and I adore the layers even as it may put a degree of distance between him and the Winchesters. He does what he does out of perceived necessity, even if in the end it turns out, like you said, that he's made the wrong choice.

Castiel will never be evil, could never be, because he has too much hope in his heart. For heaven, for humanity, for the world.

Yeah, his palpable guilt is one of the reasons I find outrage about "evil!Cas" so strange. He's clearly not evil; if anything he's human.

And that's also weird, because so many Cas fans were calling on him to start feeling stuff again, and were worried that he'd lost all his emotional depth after S5. Personally, I'm thrilled to see all this emotion from him! When it comes to feelings, though, you have to take the bad with the good.

I'm glad to see that there are people who are not oh so butthurt over Castiel's development. It's like Sam season 4-5 all over again ( ... )

That was too long. Forgive me...

It was not too long at all! I think you're pretty much right about all of it.

He is not being character assassinated. It is called growth and development and awesomeness and haters can take a walk to the left.

Yes, THIS. He's actually got far more character development this season than ever before, and it *is* in-character with his previous actions. Not liking it because it doesn't match your personal preferences is okay, it's pretty clear to me at least that the writers know what they're doing.

I haven't seen any fandom criticism of Castiel in that episode yet, but then I've only really been looking for general squee. Because that's all I can must right now. Brain is still overloaded by awesome.

I love your letter, though, and I agree. I think there's more going on with Castiel than we've seen and that as his story unfolds we'll find that he's just trying to survive, to do the right thing. Perhaps he's making bad choices, perhaps not, but his intentions are honest and pure. I do so love that little angel nerd. :D

Yeah, I sort of stumbled on the criticism and I was like "You people are killing my buzz!"

So I wrote this, and then re-watched the episode. And squee'd some more. I particularly love how Cas goes from angel slaying BAMF to woobie collapsing in Bobby's arms in about 5 seconds flat. Something for everyone.

I have done regrettable things, yes, but I have done them out of a desire to do good.

OH HAI S4 SAM. CASTIEL OWES YOU AN APOLOGY.

I'm with serrico on Dreamwidth, though. Screwing with the soul = rape metaphor.

To be honest, I'm getting really fucking tired of characters - and fandom - holding grudges and keeping track of which characters owe which characters apologies. They have all made mistakes - big ones - by this point. I think Cas probably is coming to understand Sam better; certainly his attitude towards Sam has changed. Dean's too. But I'm with Dean at this point - clean slate wherever possible ( ... )

So much THIS!

Castiel, you go on with your bad self, honey, and fight the good fight anyway you can.

And later, honey, you and Dean can have an angsty argument about it and there will be so much staring at each other.
