Dear fandom,

We need to discuss your definition of the word evil.

I am not, and have never been, evil. When one is an angel, especially a high-ranking one, there are difficult choices to be made. I have done regrettable things, yes, but I have done them out of a desire to do good. This was true when I dutifully worked for Heaven, when I turned against my brothers and sisters to assist the Winchesters in averting the Apocalypse, and now, in my battles against Raphael. I am motivated by love and a desire for justice, not out of a thirst for power in and of itself.

Many of us face these choices, human and angel alike. Dean has made these difficult choices. Sam has made these choices. So did John Winchester, and Bobby Singer and Samuel Campbell and Anna and even maybe the demon Crowley. We all find ourselves caught between two desires, and we don't always make the right choices. I believe in what I'm fighting for, but I'm not certain it's always the right thing, and I certainly don't enjoy the idea of hurting my friends. Maybe this is what free will is all about. I still have learning and growing to do.

I'm not asking you to understand my choices, or to approve of them. They make me morally imperfect, complex, maybe even as close to human as I will ever be. But they certainly don't make me evil. Your oversimplifications irk me, fandom. I am not a caricature.

Yours in moral ambiguity (not evilness),

Castiel
Badass motherfucker with a heart of gold.
Because angels can have layers, too.
