Oscar Simulation 2010 is over!

Feb 24, 2010 19:19

Voting Closed. Results are now posted here.

Basically, this is an Oscar voting simulation! Anyone who wants to vote can do so here. These are based on your own personal preferences. It's not a predictions contest. Just follow the instructions below, submit your personal ballot and after the deadline, I will tabulate the results based on the Academy's system (preferential for Best Picture, regular voting for all the other categories) and post them shortly afterwards.

Pimp this html!
Obviously, we want to get a BIG sample size to have a decent vote here so pimp this out your journals or in any film-related communities you're in. But maybe not in specific film's communities (i.e. 100_scalps) cause that would skew the results. Or if I need more people, I'll try to pimp it in all the communities that have nominations. It's just that some films have huge fanbases (i.e. Inglourious Basterds) on this site while others don't.

Instructions: Please Read Carefully!

1. Copy and Paste the HTML code in the below scroll box into a comment in this entry.

2. Fill out the ballot to the best of your ability from the nominees listed below. You MUST pick only from the nominees list. You can leave anything blank if you want.

3. For Best Picture, you need to rank the nominees in order of your preference (your favorite would be 1 and your least favorite would be 10). I won't make any rules about how you rank films that you haven't seen yet because the Academy doesn't force you to see everything you vote for. So technically, you are perfectly in your rights to vote for a movie or performance you haven't seen (and honestly, how the fuck would I even know if you've seen something or not?). Of course, it would be better if you vote for stuff you have seen. However, since you people did not receive a shitload of free screeners and seeing as how the Best Picture winner is calculated by rank, you don't have to rank a film at the bottom if you haven't seen it. It's all up to you. If you want to refresh your memory on how this system works and maybe learn a little more about your power as a voter (aka sabotage), you can read up on it here. Remember, knowledge is power!

4. For the other categories, you only vote for ONE of the nominees that is your favorite. All the categories will be included, except for the "short" features just because people typically have never seen them. For acting categories, please write in the Actors Name, Film Title. For example: Meryl Streep, Julia and Julia. For tech, music and screenplay awards, just write the title of the film. You don't need to put down all people involved.

5. If you don't feel qualified to judge certain categories like the techs, just vote for your favorite movie among the nominees. The entire Academy votes on all the categories in the real thing so chances are Eddie Murphy doesn't really know what good sound mixing is either. Or if you really don't feel qualified, leave it blank.

6. There is an extra category called "Should have been nominated for Best Picture". Write in ONE movie that you personally thought deserved a Best Picture nomination but did not get nominated.

7. Comments will be screened. It's the closest thing we have to a secret ballot so no one else will be able to see your ballot except yourself and me (cause I have to tally it up!). No peer pressure. And since they will be secret ballot, NO ANONYMOUS SUBMISSIONS PLEASE. If your ballot is anonymously submitted, it will not count. If I notice anything unclear in your ballot, I will reply to your comment to let you know so you can come back to fix it or explain what you meant.

8. Ballots need to be submitted before Tuesday, February 23 at 8:00pm EST. Results will be revealed shortly afterward depending on how many ballots need to be counted. Try to submit as early as possible. I mean, if you're pretty sure that you won't be watching any more nominated films in the next week, just do it now. In order to adequately explain how the Best Picture winner was determined, I'll probably also post charts/graphs that will show you how the voting/counting went down in each round and you can see how this preferrential system works. Check back to this journal to find out! Results should be posted by the next day (Wednesday, February 24).

9. Just vote for what you like best! Especially in Best Picture, don't feel like you have to put a supposed frontrunner in your #1 spot. The whole point of the preferential system is so people don't feel the need to cluster around the big guns. Even if your favorite of the nominees is not considered a big contender for the win, put it at #1 anyways. You might be surprised! And even if your first choice doesn't make it, your vote will never go to waste because of the rankings. It'll just go to your #2 or #3 pick.

10. Finally, have fun!

Edit: I just realized that I forgot about Best Foreign Film. Oh well, not many of the nominees are even available yet.
