Regarding the money: a couple of years ago, I started plugging every transaction I made into an accounting package. It takes a while to get into the habit of noting every transaction, but it's a healthy exercise. (Though if you're of a certain obsessive bent, it quickly becomes an addiction).
I don't know if I have the sort of diligence that is required - I might be able to do it for a couple weeks... that might at least help give me an idea of what's going on.
Since I've moved out on my own, I've found one thing that has helped cut my food budget, I pretty much only buy fresh food. Nothing premade, and I do all my own cooking. It takes a bit longer, but I spend less on food now, and I'm eating healthier to.
I rarely buy pre-made, but I do eat out a lot - which is expensive, especially since I have very little tolerance for fast food.
But yes, it is certainly one of my directives to do more cooking from fresh - takes more time, but it's healthier and it saves money (provided I don't go out and make steak every day, which is a temptation!)
