“Can we go somewhere and talk, Jack?” Ianto asked, watching Jack’s face and keeping his own deliberately impassive.
Jack swallowed and nodded. “My office.” He glanced around at the others. “Back to work everyone.”
Ianto turned and walked back into Jack’s office. He was aware of Jack following him and when he turned back to face him, Ianto saw that Jack had drawn the blinds.
“Look, I’m really sorry, Ianto. I had to go with him. I’ve been waiting for so long. I tried. I really did try to get back sooner.”
Ianto held up a finger. “Be quiet, Jack. You’re going to listen to me. I’ve got some things to say.”
Jack closed his mouth and leaned against the wall with his hands in his pockets. Ianto watched him. Jack looked utterly dejected.
“I put Lisa behind me. In London. I’m going to remember her and some part of me will always love her. But I made the decision to move on with my life. I made that decision in London. And then I came back. And you weren’t here.”
“Ianto, please. I’m sorry. I came back for you.”
Ianto smiled. “Is that the truth?”
“Yes, Ianto. I wouldn’t lie to you. I came back for you.”
“You know what I discovered, Jack?”
Jack shook his head. “No. What?”
Ianto took a step closer to Jack and he could feel his expression was very serious. “I discovered, whilst you weren’t here, that I don’t need you.”
Jack looked up at him and he looked almost as though he was going to cry. “You…you don’t?”
“No. Not anymore. I don’t need you. I can be strong without you. I can survive. I can be happy without you. I don’t need you one little bit.”
Jack looked down at the floor. “Okay. So, you’ve moved on. I…suppose I was expecting it a little.” He glanced up at Ianto. “If you want to resign, I’ll let you. I won’t retcon you or anything.”
Ianto smiled and reached out to stroke Jack’s cheek. “I’m not going to resign.”
Jack just watched him and waited for him to say more.
“I don’t need you. But I want you.”
Jack’s mouth slowly spread into an uncertain grin. “Yeah? You do? You mean it?
Ianto nodded. “I mean it.” He slung an arm around Jack’s neck, standing close to him.
“And I was thinking. Maybe…we should go out,” Ianto said. “You know. Dinner, a movie. All that.”
Jack grinned. “I can’t say no to that.”
Ianto felt his eyes go bright. “We can do it all properly, have fun. Be as normal as possible. And…love each other.”
“I love you, Ianto,” Jack whispered.
“I love you too,” Ianto said and leaned forward to meet Jack’s lips in a kiss.
And inside, he could feel the light. Light spreading through both their bodies, soothing the darkness away.
