“Right, where do you want to land?” asked the Doctor, twirling round the console.
“The day I left? Can you do that?”
The Doctor hummed. “You don’t half make things tricky, Jack. What’s wrong with the next week?”
“No, I can’t be away for too long. I can’t let him come back to find I’m not there.”
“Ah, this mysterious Ianto Jones!” said the Doctor, emphasising Ianto’s name.
“He’ll understand, won’t he?” said Martha. “If you’re a little late.”
“No, he needs me. I’ve got to be there for him.”
“Best I can do is a week after you left.”
“A week?”
“Sorry. Time tracks getting in the way. You can’t arrive in Cardiff whilst you’re still in London, or on the Valiant. Best I can do.”
Jack covered his face. “Oh, god. He’s going to get there and I won’t be there!”
Martha patted his back. “He’ll understand. He will.”
Jack didn’t say anything. He had forever but he didn’t have enough time right there and then to be with Ianto.
The Tardis landed on the plas.
“You could come with us, you know. If you want,” said the Doctor.
Jack looked at him and smiled. He’d wanted that. For decades, he’d wanted that. He’d wanted the Doctor to come and find him and take him away, keep him with him for always. But not now. Now, things were different. Now, he had somebody to go home to.
“No thanks. I’ve got a team to go home to. I’ve got him.” He gave them a cheeky salute. “See you around,” he said and ran off back to the hub.
When Jack got inside, all seemed normal. He put his bag down and looked around the hub.
Tosh was tapping away on her computer. Owen was fiddling about with something in the medical bay. Gwen was coming up from the bay with a pile of files. Ianto was no where to be seen.
It took them a minute or two to realise Jack was there and when they did, he was inundated with hugs and questions.
“Where’ve you been?” asked Gwen. “It’s been over a week!”
“He was with his doctor,” said a new voice. “Weren’t you?”
Jack turned and there was Ianto. He’d just stepped out of Jack’s office. He was wearing a beautiful black suit with a purple shirt and he looked gorgeous. His expression was his professional one, giving away absolutely nothing.
“Yes. I was. And now I’m home.”
Ianto just looked at him, cool and impassive. And Jack began to get a little scared. Martha was wrong. Ianto wasn’t going to understand.
