Laughter is the window to the heart."

He always knew when Steve was in residence on the Watchtower.

Clark walked down the metallic corridor, cape swirling behind him prettily. Capes were very handy for dramatic effect, and he’d been practicing for quite a few years. He smiled as he thought of the many ways that Bruce used his to enhance the mystery of the Bat.

Laughter drifted down the corridor. Even without his super-hearing, he would have been able to hear it. Diana’s laughter spilled down the corridors like a clean, fresh waterfall. He always smiled when he heard it.

Diana didn’t need Steve to laugh. She enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest, but her laughter always took on an even more joyous quality when in the presence of her lover, who could always make her laugh.

For a fleeting moment, he wished that Bruce could laugh so freely and easily, but then the thought left him, as he knew he would treasure every rare instance of genuine laughter from his lover.

Clark entered the cafeteria, immediately spotting the Amazon and her Air Force pilot sitting at a table by the window, the Earth rotating slowly below them in a sight that never failed to awe him no matter how many times he had seen it from space. Dinah, Ollie and Hal were also at the table, relaxed and grinning while Steve gestured as he told his story.

“…and so the Princess here straightens up while holding together the pieces of this enormous ratty blanket we’d found in the shed, tiara on her head and Her Majesty saying haughtily, ‘I beg your pardon.’”

“Now that’s a sight I’d pay to see!” Hal teased, Diana giving him a gentle kick under the table.

“My Beloved easily leaves out how he was trying to hold up a pair of oversized jeans and trying not to look like my ravaged boy toy,” she said smugly, fingering her Golden Lasso suggestively. Hal smirked, sharing a wickedly saucy look with Diana.

“Hey!” Steve brushed back an errant lock of blond hair as he glared at his Angel and best friend.

More laughter rolled out from the table, Clark chuckling. Ollie saw him and called, “Hey, pull up a chair, Clark!” Clark grabbed one from the next table and settled between Ollie and Hal, Dinah on Ollie’s other side.

Steve’s blue eyes sparkled as he regarded his Angel. “She can ravage me anytime,” he said, and it was Diana’s turn to blush. Whoops and applause greeted this statement, Clark joining in.

Diana was gazing at Steve happily, and Clark was glad for her. She was a woman of dignity and grace, yet her favorite method of greeting her lover was by leaping into his arms, which he never protested, naturally. They always greeted each other with the same joy that they had enjoyed the very first time.

And that was a gift, Clark knew. Diana and Steve’s love was always fresh, even when they spent so much time together. Despite busy careers, both managed to snatch time together, and Diana still kept up her secret identity as Steve’s aide while Steve gave her a nod and a wink.

He was always devising ways of showing her the pleasures of her adopted culture, and managed to slip in pizza as often as possible, Diana’s favorite American food. She in turn liked to show him bits and pieces of her own culture, even though he was not allowed to set foot on Paradise Island, and he eagerly learned all he could, taking part in rituals or feasting or the Amazon way of love.

And there was always the laughter. As quiet as Diana and Steve could be, their eyes would sparkle with their joy, usually intertwined with mirth, and Clark felt that it fit them very well, indeed.

He had always enjoyed laughter in his life: with his parents, with his friends, with special people like Dick, who took such joy in life, and who was one of the best things to ever happen to Bruce, not to mention himself.

“Let me tell you about our young pilot’s adventures in the Air Force as a starry-eyed noob,” Hal smirked, Steve immediately protesting while Diana eagerly egged Hal on.

Ollie leaned back in his chair, anticipating the show, and Dinah echoed Hal’s smirk. Clark grinned and Hal began, “Well, he and I hooked up in boot camp and went into town on our very first pass after our trial-by-fire, so naturally we wound up in a bar and there were some Marine pilots who took offense to an entirely innocent comment I made…”

“…which insulted the Marines…” Steve continued.

“…and they thought they could take us…”

“…which of course proved a foolish assumption…”

“…and after the place resembled a war zone, Stevie and I ducked out the back and took a tour of the alleys of that charming little seaside town…”

“…and we wound up on the beach for the rest of the night, keeping out of the MPs’ way.”

“A common bar brawler,” Diana said, shaking her head, but her eyes were twinkling.

Steve grinned at her. “And you love it.”

“I love you.”

Clark felt his heart warm at the matter-of-fact declaration. Neither Diana nor Steve were shy about their love, another engaging trait fueled by Amazon openness about relationships and Steve’s easy acceptance.

A hand rested on his shoulder and he turned to look at Bruce in full regalia. “Hey, pull up a chair.”

Bruce nodded and sat next to Clark as Hal moved over to give him room. Clark heard Bruce’s heartbeat speed up slightly, aware that his lover was a bit nervous about inserting himself into such a jolly group. It wasn’t seemly for the Bat to be seen laughing, and Bruce was a quiet introvert despite his Brucie persona, which was all an act. Clark brushed his hand against his companion’s glove, his cape touching Bruce’s silk.

“So did you act out From Here To Eternity on the beach?” Dinah teased the pilots, and Hal laughed.

“Gentlemen never kiss and tell,” he winked, Steve giving him a playful shove.

Dinah smirked and stood. “Orders?”

Rapid-fire “Coffee…green tea…Coke…coffee with whipped cream…roast beef sandwich…ham-and-cheese-on-rye…salad…” and so on bombarded the Canary.

“I’ll help you, Pretty Bird,” Ollie offered, and they went to the servers.

Diana asked Bruce a question from the last meeting, and Clark observed Steve’s adoring gaze on her as she talked. The blond had fallen quiet, letting her take the stage, and was content to listen.

It was what Bruce did best, of course…listen. But Clark was pretty good at it himself. As Bruce talked to Diana, Clark listened to the cadence of his lover’s voice, the undertone of excitement as Diana engaged him in a spirited intellectual debate, and felt his heart swell with love.

Dinah and Ollie were laughing as they returned with trays of food and drink, parceling them out and Ollie joking about tips, and Steve’s fingers entwined with Diana’s as her face lit up and she laughed softly at something he said, too low for anyone else to hear except Clark.

Clark felt wistful as Steve’s declaration of love was so freely given, but then he felt gloved fingers entwine with his under the table and their mingled capes, Bruce’s other hand casually lifting his coffee cup and sipping the piping-hot liquid, and Clark smiled as laughter tumbled around the table, the stars twinkling as the blue-and-white Earth rotated serenely below the happy group at the table.
