FIRST SNOW

Clark tossed and turned restlessly.  He couldn’t get to sleep for some reason.  His stomach wasn’t upset.  His mother’s cooking was the best and he hadn’t overeaten…well, at least not that much.

He sat up in bed, running a hand through his hair.  The stars outside his window sparkled brightly in the clear night air.  Yawning, he decided to give sleep another try.

& & & & & &

Snow was falling, blanketing the gardens of the mansion with delicate white flakes.  Clark had once looked at snowflakes with his microscopic vision and it was true: no two snowflakes were alike.  Amazed at the beauty of nature, he liked nothing better than to walk through the snow, sticking his tongue out and tasting the ephemeral coldness.

“I have better uses for that tongue.”

Clark turned and saw Lex, who was standing in a dark-purple coat, his hands in his pockets, an indulgent smile on his handsome face.

He looked beautiful in the falling snow.

“I should commission an artist to make a statue of you, Clark.” He approached Clark, confidence in every move.  Clark took a step back, but then Lex reached out and touched the side of his face. “Let me love you,” he said breathlessly, and before Clark could blink, Lex had leaned in for a kiss, warm and wet and loving…

& & & & & &

Clark sat bolt upright in bed, his heart racing.  The dream had been so vivid!  He looked out at the stars, still twinkling in the cloudless sky.

As he lay back down, he wondered if he could be so bold as to do what Lex had done in the dream…

& & & & & &

“They’re gone!”

“What?”

Clark stared at Lex in shock as the other man gesticulated wildly. “They’re gone, Clark!  I just went upstairs and their room’s empty, and they’re not at the Towers.  I don’t like the idea of them roaming around out there even if they have soaked up a lot of knowledge…”

Clark thought, then grasped Lex’s arms. “The gardens!”

Lex’s eyes widened, and they ran outside.

The bases once again held two statues.

Clark wasn’t sure how he felt in the first few seconds, then sorrow washed over him.  He was going to miss these two special men, and wished there had been some other way to end the spell.

“Looks like things are back to normal,” Lex murmured.

Clark looked at him, struck by the snowflakes on his long lashes.  It had begun snowing on his way over here.

“Are you sad about that?”

Lex looked at Clark. “Yeah, I think so.” He sighed. “It was kind of cool to have Alexander the Great and his treasured friend here staying at my house.  I was lucky that Dad hadn’t come home for Thanksgiving.  He might have thrown a monkey wrench into the mix.”

Clark was thinking, Those snowflakes looks so beautiful on him, and blushed.

Lex’s eyes widened slightly. “Clark…”

“Yes?”

Lex moved closer. “I…I had a dream last night.”

“You…you did?”

Lex nodded, looking a little nervous. “I…Alexander and I talked when he was here…you know the Ancient Greeks, they had a different view of things, but essentially, he was right.”

“About what?” Clark thought he would pass out from anticipation and nervousness.

Lex lifted his hand up to caress Clark’s face. “About you being ‘fair of face.’”

Happiness flooded through Clark and he gently grasped Lex’s hand, pulling it down to kiss the palm.  He heard Lex’s little intake of breath, then they leaned forward for a kiss.

Wet…

Warm…

Loving.

They stood together with their arms around each other, the snow lightly falling all around them.  Breaking apart, Lex murmured, “So beautiful,” as he brushed snowflakes out of Clark’s shining dark hair.  Clark smiled like the sun, and Lex took his hand.

Conqueror of my heart, Clark thought.

They headed for the mansion.

The statues were still, marble layered with snow.

This time, the statues were holding hands.
