HOURGLASS

The day was bountiful all around: Alexander, Hephaestion, and Lex arrived with gifts of wine and dessert as Thanksgiving dinner was cooking in the oven and on top of the stove.  Martha had cooked all the traditional trimmings: turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, salad, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and green beans.  There was apple, pumpkin, and mince pie in addition to the chocolate cream pie that the guests had brought.

It was a traditional day as well: friends and family around the dining room table, a festive centerpiece of candles, leaves, and fruit, and then the clean-up with all hands on deck and everyone too stuffed to move except to the living room and the slate of football games.

Clark was sitting beside Lex again and thought of Hephaestion’s words about what he could offer his friend, and his cheeks flamed.  No one noticed as the first game started.

Clark concentrated on the game, trying not to notice how close Lex was and how good he smelled with that distinctive cologne.

When the day ended, Clark walked back with his guests, the Macedonians preferring to walk rather than ride despite the cold, and Lex did not mind.  Clark was happy to spend more time with him.

When they reached the mansion Alexander and Hephaistion went inside and Clark and Lex stayed out to look at the stars, trying to walk off some of the food they’d eaten.  Lex patted his stomach.

“Your mother stuffed us like turkeys!” he joked.

“She’s gotten into the habit since she’s got two men on the farm with big appetites,” Clark said with a laugh.

They stopped by the empty bases of the Macedonian statues.  Lex looked at the marble broodingly. “I think their time is running out.”

“Do you think they know?”

“They haven’t said.” Lex shrugged. “Then again, maybe I’m wrong.”

“I feel it, too, Lex.”

Lex looked at Clark, butterflies going through the younger man’s stomach.  Lex’s eyes were reflecting the starlight, pale and almost violet in their blueness.  Clark wanted to reach out…

“I guess we’d better get back inside,” Lex said, and Clark nodded.

He didn’t know whether he was disappointed or relieved.

As they went inside, a cloud of sparkles appeared by the statue bases.

Sabrina and Salem coalesced into solid form.
