I keep hearing such glorious tales about IKEA. What's the big deal? Are they supposed to be well-priced or something?

Yes, their furniture is reasonably priced for the most part, partially because you have to put it together. I think people are drawn to IKEA because they like how practical, uniquely styled, or minimal the furniture is. The furniture I got was more practical than anything.

I found myself saying "WTF?" one minute looking at items that seemed too weirdly styled or minimal, and then "OMG this is sweet!" the next at stuff that was really practical and looked good to me. Examples of things I didn't like at IKEA were night stands that weren't practical & the right size, foldable barstools that didn't really match my dining room set, and their bed frames which seem to require their proprietary matresses instead of the standard box spring/mattress combo.

apparently they are big in europe, because my mom knows of them well. she keeps calling me and asking if i've been to IKEA yet. apparently because i live much closer to tempe than she does, i shouldn't be able to resist the temptation to go or something. i'll have to check them out.
