Oxford Bound

Feb 13, 2008 08:13

Three months ago I submitted an application to Harris Manchester College of Oxford University to attend next fall as a visiting student.

Last night I got an e-mailed response saying I got in. . . so come September, I'm off to England!

That's awesome! Congratulations!

So what exactly does it mean to be a "visiting student"?

It means I'm actually a full student of the University rather than being in a study abroad or American university attached to one of the colleges.

If your a visiting student you get the full privileges of any University student, like full access to the Bodlien Library, access to University wide lectures, and I get the same professors and same "system" (Oxford has a tutorial system, its one-on-one with a lot of your research and work being done independently on your own time) as the British students.

If I came in on a study abroad program or as part of an American university then I wouldn't be able to attend lectures, I'd be limited to accessing the Bodlien only during slower times, and I would probably be in courses designed for study abroad students that may or may not be taught by actual Oxford dons.
