I Just Don't Get It

Recently, I started watching the ontd_political community, as I am very interested in politics. The problem now is two-fold: first, there are so many posts that it's jamming my Friends page; and secondly (and more importantly) I'm getting so depressed reading about all the anti-women laws being passed by various U.S. States. Someone wrote at the ( Read more... )

Politics in the US is becoming very scary. You have the Dems who want us to live in a nanny state, legislating mediocrity for all while bankrupting the country in the process and you have the Republicans trying to legislate their version of morality which ends up setting the country backwards in terms of rights for people who aren't white Christian men. Unfortunately, you end up with shit on both sides. What the US needs is a government that is more representative of its population, but unfortunately, the 2 party system is a corrupt system bought by special interest groups and dominated by extremists on both sides of the political spectrum.

It's really frustrating. I don't vote along party lines. I make an effort to research candidates and their voting records to see if their views align with mine, but it's getting harder and harder to find anyone on either side that has a shred of common sense and common decency these days.

You're right of course; BOTH sides are problematic. I just tend to react more when somebody starts messing around with women's rights. At least you have TWO parties; at the moment in Canada there is only one party that's doing well, and it's not a party I have ever supported. Until the other parties get their act together it is likely the party that's going to be in power. We currently are cursed with a Prime Minister who will not let any member of his party speak to the press or anyone without having their statement/speech cleared by his office. Even then, it's rare for anyone but his closest circle to be allowed to address the public. He feels no need to explain or defend his actions; now that he has a majority, he can and already has, done whatever he bloody well pleases. This does not bode well for our country for the next four years.
