Vincent & Theo

Inspired by Doctor Who, I watched Vincent & Theo again yesterday. I'd forgotten how dirty a film it is. Everything's covered with paint, or blood, or paint and blood. The paint is ubiquitous; it's embedded in the flesh and teeth, it's licked off of the brush, or legs, or necks, or shoulders. It's weirdly sexy.

Caps of dirtyness. Also other bits I liked. )

interest: films, pictures

Two things I remember vividly from that film: in the first picture you posted, after the woman pees in the chamber pot she wipes herself with either the hem of her petticoat or the corner of the bedspread; and Theo's wife eating in a restaurant and really digging into the meat and relishing her meal while he and Vincent are talking.

Please remind me: is that Gaugin Van Gogh is kissing on the bed?

It's the corner of the cloth hanging over the basket you can see there and yes, it is a memorable scene. The other you mentioned - well, there are two scenes like it actually. One is Theo and his wife in a restaurant alone; she is digging into her dinner, and he starts crying because Vincent has been committed. The second is at the house of Vincent's doctor. She is getting excited over the lamb, and the doctor is championing his success with Vincent, telling everyone he is completely cured, while Vincent sits silently with a plate full of picked-apart bread.

Yes, it's Gauguin.

It's funny, the details you remember. It was her getting excited over the lamb that I remember. I also remember Vincent blowing his brains out in the field and the crows flying up.

Now that I think of it, it was almost exactly 20 years ago that I saw it, in London, with the man I eventually married.

I am so thoroughly convinced. Just wish I had a copy of it so I could watch!
