Sam could sense that the answer to that question was important. But trying to force the answer out was like trying to hold a fistful of smoke.

This line is genius- especially considering Sam does exactly that when grabbing a hold of demons!

Huh, you are absolutely right, and I hadn't consciously intended that...

I love when readers see things that I didn't know were in there! Thanks!

This is a great, almost meta-ish look at the changes that have taken place in Sam. I love how you point out the times in which, soul or no soul, Sam still felt something in relation to Dean that can't be attributed to cold, hard logic. The thought that a person's identity is something you can't totally erase no matter how big a part of them you take out is a really comforting and powerful one.

I really, really want there to still be something ephemeral but real that keeps Sam linked to Dean and therefore his humanity!

Thank you for your comments!

This was brilliant. I like the use of the word lodestone to describe family. I like how Sam trusts family by rote memory alone. I agree that being with Dean would confuse him!!!

Thank you! Yes, I figured the concept of 'family' would be burned into both boys deeper than soul even.

Very interesting - apparently, he can become fuddled even without the soul. But I like him MUCH better with it!

I would think everyone would prefer Sam with his soul back!

Thanks for reading!

I really like the analytical nature of this piece. I think you captured soulless!Sam very well and the moments you chose to look at again were just perfect. Nice work!
