Apparently I am completely unable to resist a challenge and when I saw
this I didn't even try to say no! Anyway, the challenge was to write 100 words for a part of the Arthurian poem "Sir Gawain and The Green Knight". I was assigned five parts, so here's the first part and accompanying drabble. Enjoy!
Their highly honoured king
was happiest of all:
no nobler knights had come
within a castle’s wall.
Arthur looked at the men gathered around the circular table and felt a sense of rightness at the scene. Leon, loyal to the core; Percival, a tower of strength; Lancelot, restored to them through Guinevere’s selfless sacrifice; Elyan, saddened by his loss but still steadfast in his duty; Gwaine, his light-hearted demeanour unbowed by the weight of responsibility, yet still strong and true. A better group of knights could not be found, nor a better group of friends.
Stirring to his right brought his attention to the last of the group - Merlin. Devoted servant, sorcerer, trusted friend, lover…always Merlin.
