Eric Taylor is a wonderful coach, but I don't think he'd be a very good science teacher. Then again, Texas used to do stuff like that until the voters made the school districts stop it.
huh. when i was growing up, Tennessee made all the coaches teach other classes as well. With only one exception (who incidentally reminds me of Coach Taylor, haha), I had horrible experiences with coaches who taught in my school, so I naturally thought it was a horrible idea. When I was at Girl's State, this was one of my "platform" issues that I wanted to put a halt to in terms of education reform, but literally all the other girls in the group with me thought I was crazy for bringing it up, haha. Now I'm really intrigued about whether Tennessee is still doing this.
In Texas the rule is that anybody who teaches a high school class has to hold a teaching certificate in that subject. So there are some coaches who are also teachers, but that's because they have dual certification in PE and whatever subject they're also teaching. The rule has been in effect since 1984, and was largely due to the efforts of Ross Perot.
At my school coaches *had* to teach, but they taught subjects that had nothing to do with coaching. Which makes sense from a budget standpoint, just... not from an educational one, as far as I'm concerned, because usually they were fine coaches, but they weren't the greatest teachers.
Then again, the year after I graduated, the whole school board was indicted for fraud and our superintendent was sent to prison, so education=never the greatest priority in my disctrict. :))
Also in Friday Night Lights there is at least one offhand reference made to Eric teaching, because he mentions having papers to grade at some point.
What an awesome dream! I am envious. I wish Lady Gaga would show up in my dreams and sit next to me. And you know she's an old pro at wearing that headgear now, and that it's all in the name of Fashion and Art and World Peace or something anyway, of course she'd be unimpressed with the question.
Also, Hugh Laurie as high school teacher? DO WANT. I'm kind of sad that I've been deprived of this experience.
You know, I'm in a class about the history of computers. When I saw the title of your post I thought it was a post in the class blog feed and was confused.

My brother's favorite is the George Orwell one. He uses the first panel as his desktop background.
