Howdy. I'm brand-spanking new to this group. I am currently working at my fourth independent bookstore. I wish I could do it full-time and forever. Alas, it is a labor of love, not of monetary rewards ( Read more... )

Pretend to get sick.

Or faint.

Or just tell them you'd love to chat it up, but you have straightening to do, and your boss will massacre you if it doesn't get done.

I tend to industriously do something (like straightening) while saying, "Uh-huh.... Hmm.... Yeah?"

The store has recently acquired a turn-table. Perhaps I should begin vigorously alphabetizing the vinyl.

This is where we look out for each other. If you see a coworker obviously trapped then you make up an urgent thing they need to go do, and take them away from the bore.

I totally keep an eye out for co-workers, even when I'm just stopping by the store off the clock. One guy keeps calling our store and talking about the last five episodes of Star Trek he watched, all the sci-fi books he wants to buy, and generally keeps whatever unlucky employee happens to answer the phone occupied there for upwards of a half-hour or more. I usually say something vaguely store-ish, like "<>, we need you to do some returns here!" or something ( ... )

We have a rescue plan - we go to another till point and ring the extension nearest to the trapped one. Either they say they have to answer it or someone else, and it works even better if they're not in on it, calls them over. Never fails.
