I think I read the rape scene without wincing. And I was pretty young too.

Then again, I read a lot of horrible fanfiction back then.

I won't be seeing the movie, but yeah, I actually agree with Jackson. If he went through with it, it might make a lot of people walk out of the theater probably.

I think it's an unusual and admirable choice for a director to exercise discretion in filming (or, in this case, NOT filming) a brutal rape. All too often, such scenes are shot in a way that contributes to a weird disjuncture between horror and titillation, and to a general desensitization towards sexual violence.

I sort of want to hug Jackson now ....

I dunno. The horrific reality of rape is something most of Hollywood does have a lot of issues with, because it's titillating, as you say. However, if it's filmed in a way that makes it disturbing, I'm in favor of that. I've done a lot of reading up on Irreversible, in which a ten-minute rape scene is shown in a continuous take. Many viewers find it extremely disturbing, because it adds a level of brutal reality that they're not used to facing in film. Many women have said they like the depiction, because it's so real and unflinching, and takes away the appealing, sexual part. Many men have commented saying they had to fast-forward, because it was too horrific.

I'm all for showing guys what women are taught to fear, in a way that makes them wiggle in their seats and think twice about making "she deserved it" jokes.

I respect that decision. It'd be like making a completely faithful adaptation of American Psycho. Just not something people would want to see.

I read that article too. I agree with Jackson for deciding to make that choice. I don't think I'd want to see Susie being raped, and I mean the book is always there if anyone wants to read about what happens to her in detail. I can understand his concerns about it being the focus of the movie instead of just a part of it when he mentioned the "Dakota Fanning Rape Movie." I never knew what it's title was, just that that's what it was due to the controversy surrounding it.
