I've been a lurker here since I saw this community on the LJ spotlight. Needless to say, it has become one of my very favorites and I visit it daily. I'm both proud and unhappy to say that I have a bookfail of my own to post--at last!

FYI, the backstory with Yelena starts in the book Poison Study, which was the only one of hers I've read. It had a relatively interesting premise -- convicted criminal is spared by agreeing to be a royal food taster -- but the plot quickly devolved into something that was clearly only there for the sake of the (not especially exciting) romance plot, as I remember. I sure didn't go read the sequels.

I'm sad the author hasn't improved any.

I didn't get to Storm Glass, but I kind of feel like the author's getting worse with every book. I liked Poison Study, but it just kept getting more and more ridiculous as the trilogy went on. I didn't bother with this one because I didn't like Opal from the earlier books.

Haha. Super-special awesome book fail.

I would hate reading about a character like this. The stupid little inocent girl that gets kidnapped at least three times a day and has to wait the male lead character to save her.
There are so many books like these I prefer not to bother.
What a let-down, she gave you a very good premise and did nothing with it. I won't be looking forward to reading Maria V. Snyder now, that's for sure.

Aww, damn! I really enjoyed the Study trilogy by this author (it had an interesting starting premise, and while it kind of got a little bland after a while, I found it competent and engaging enough to stick with it. Though I wish Snyder did more with the food-tasting talents of Yelena! But I loved Yelena's two friend Ari and Janco, they were awesome), so I wanted to check this out but I'd been waffling. I guess I'll be saving myself the time. :(

I read Poison Study, and though I liked the idea behind it, I was left greatly underwhelmed by the lack of description, boring romance, and bland writing [as well as a fact that I just didn't care about the characters].
It sounds like the author's slipping even more downhill with the follow-up books, which is unfortunate. :/
