It's been awhile since I read the MST books, but I remember the beginning being a slog as well. The series does get better, although I don't remember at what point it really starts to improve. However, it never gets anywhere near as good as the Otherland books, IMO. If you're this desperate to give up on the book, I'd say for you it's probably not worth finishing. It was a slog for me, but never so much that I wanted to give up on it.

I read the whole thing and I completely agree with you! I don't even remember the plotline at all, it was such bland standard fantasy. At least the covers are lovely?

I adored War of the Flowers, and what I've read of Shadowmarch and Otherland, so I don't know what the hell happened with these books. If you continue with the series, you're braver than I am. They were simply too long and dense for me to bother with after that first one.

I started it. Years ago. Never finished. Have no desire to... as you said, very dull. I think I got about halfway, and it was STILL dull. Things were actually starting to happen, and I still put it down.

I read the series while I was waiting for the next Otherland book to come out when I was a teenager. I read a lot of bad fantasy when I was a teenager. I barely remember it now, but even the most memorable bits are pretty unexciting.

I wouldn't waste my time, on it, honestly. It's pretty much a paint by numbers fantasy.

I've read the entire series and yes, the beginning is drawn out as hell.

It's not going to get any better unless you have a high tolerance for standard fantasy tropes.
