Bad Book Reccs, Nostalgia, and Two Christophers

I'm a sucker for vampires sometimes, so when a friend let me borrow Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck: A Love Story, I got a bit excited. I had been obstaining from most vampire literature for as long as I could in order to let the Twilight phenomenon run its course out of the bookstores and I was dying for another taste (badum-cha!).

I had no idea ( Read more... )

at least the cover is cool, i couldn't even finish this awful book, character development fail, nonsparkly vampire fails, author last names m-s, thank god it was just fiction, feminism just got set back 50 years

Lamb is great. Fluke is another of my favorites. The rest of his work... once you've read one, you pretty much know what they'll be like. Cheap laughs, tiresome plots.

I knew the way the main character narrated in You Suck was supposed to be stylistic, but it aggravated me to the point where I gave up and put it down.

I'm reading Practical Demonkeeping and I'd say it's a vast improvement.

I picked up You Suck at a used booksale, and I was excited about that. $4 for a hardcover! And it genuinely sounded interesting based on the synopsis. Part of the problem, I think, is I hadn't read the first book so I didn't connect with the character(s) it opened with. The other thing was, it had a good hook sentence but the rest of the chapter didn't deliver.

I liked Bloodsucking Fiends as a subversion of earlier vampire novels, but it predates Twilight, so the tropes have all shifted since it was written. The later ones just got worse and worse, to the point where I wish he'd just left well enough alone, and found another subject to satirize.

I've never read Christopher Moore's vampire books because quite frankly I'm sick of vampires, but I love the shit out of his other books and he's probably one of my favourite authors. Don't totally give up on him!
