Well I encourage you to try for yourself; others seem to genuinely enjoy it. But I'd get it from the library, don't outright by it.

Well, at least the sex scene seems realistic for a male's first time?

I liked it, and I didnt see anything wrong with the points you mentioned. I think you're kind of reaching, tbh.

I don't think I'm reaching at all. These were points that I genuinely found problems with. The useless dialogue was the biggest though. It really dragged the story.

I really enjoyed this book, and I have to disagree with most of the points you raised-- other than the convenient ending. I really, really wanted Old Jacob's wife whom he loved so well to be some other woman he met along the road of life-- as with JK Rowling, I have to criticize Sara Gruen for falling into the sentimental trap of having first loves marry. I found the plot enthralling and I thought the writing was good if not great, but the fairy tale ending felt a little like the work of an adolescent. The only thing that saved it was that, at the end of his life, Old Jacob was alone, his wife having died some time ago.
