JD Salinger dies at 91

Jan 28, 2010 14:12

Apparently, J.D. Salinger died at the age of 91 today.

I've seen Catcher and the Rye all over this community before, so I thought this piece of news would be relevant. A moment of silence for the author of a classic (or a terrible book, your choice). Or you could just post here and say why you hate this book, because to be honest, I haven't read ( Read more... )

author last names m-s, it's literature dammit

Author Existence Failure? Really?

Seems rather tactless to me.

I changed the title of the post, I'm sorry. It wasn't meant to offend. Kicking myself appropriately.

Yeah, I just saw the news on wikipedia's main page. I respect Salinger for living life on his own terms.
I really like The Catcher in the Rye, it's got a style perfectly fit for the subject matter. It's a thought-provoking book, but I can understand why some people dislike it. Nevetheless, I think it's one of those books that are important that people read and know about.

Maybe change the title of the post? I wouldn't say Salinger's existence was a failure. I didn't like Catcher in the Rye at all, but I think he deserves some honor and respect.

Sorry, sorry, I didn't mean it like that--I changed it. It was referring to the fact that he died, NOT that he was a failure. Augh. D: Sorry...

Am I correct in assuming "Author Existence Failure" just means he is failing to exist any longer? As in, "he's pretty dead", and not "his entire existence FAILED"? If so, I lol'd.

Anyway, Catcher in the Rye was not something I could enjoy, but I'm not much for coming-of-age stories with no real action or conclusion. :/ It didn't speak to me. Most classics, when they are less amazing than I had previously thought, I can at least see the importance of having read it and appreciate the experience. Not so with Catcher. I just wanted my afternoon back. Hohum.
